From the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, this volume reports on a study of the Committee on Underrepresented Groups and the Expansion of the Science and Engineering Workforce Pipeline on minority participation in science and engineering. Consisting of specialists in K-12 and higher education, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, STEM employment across sectors, diversity, public policy, and program evaluation, the committee was appointed in 2008 and used expert testimony, previous reports and the academic literature, and analysis of national data to consider strategies for increasing participation and recommendations for dealing with issues in the areas of education, access to education and motivation towards the fields, college affordability, and academic and social support. It makes institutional, leadership, and program recommendations, and suggests implementation actions across educational stages and stakeholders. No index is provided.
