The stories of six downed airmen who managed to evade capture after being shot down during WWII. The six stories each occur in a different country Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Albania, and Greece. The author draws on interviews with the airmen, official USAAF after-action reports, and interviews with some of the locals who helped them in their escapes. He precedes the stories with a chapter on the Underground and the tactics that the Germans employed in trying to prevent escapes, and concludes with a brief discussion of the art of evasion and survival.
