The eighteenth edition of this introductory college textbook on environmental science has some major changes. The authors have partnered with the National Geographic Society, which gives the text the branded National Geographic layout style and abundant high-quality photographs, as well as profiles of environmental scientists who have been named as National Geographic Explorers. Many new case studies have also been added, along with two chapter-end features: Doing Environmental Science and Global Environment Watch. The book is fundamentally an introductory social science text about sustainability, but chapters 2-8 provide some features of a biological science ecology text. As a social science textbook, it is strongly concerned with ethics, and steers a course between critical thinking and prescriptive modes, both asking open-ended questions and suggesting appropriate answers. It encourages student action at levels such as taking shorter showers or not using lab animals. Global issues such as poverty and overpopulation are covered, and the book asks hard questions about social justice and future resource use while supporting the idea that more development on a Western model is the cure.
