The fifth edition of this textbook for students in health disciplines has been updated with new images, data, and recent research. Definitions have been aligned with the 2008 Dictionary of Epidemiology. This edition also contains new material on epidemiology and the environment in areas such as global warming and the Japanese tsunami. Early chapters relate historical background, key concepts, measures of morbidity and mortality, and practical applications. The next eight chapters focus on elements of descriptive epidemiology such as study design. Four more chapters cover infectious diseases, occupational and environmental health, molecular and genetic epidemiology, and psychosocial epidemiology. Learning features include chapter objectives, outlines, study questions, and selected answers. A companion web site contains interactive exercises, a glossary, essay questions, and web links. A previous course in introductory biostatistics is helpful but not necessary. The text is for undergraduate medical and nursing students, undergraduate and graduate health education and social ecology students, and students in Master's degree programs in public health. Friis teaches at California State University. Sellers is affiliated with Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
