The second edition was perhaps criticized for the quality of its illustrations, because Mitsch (natural resources and environmental science, Ohio State U.) and Gosselink (emeritus, coastal energy and environmental resources, Louisiana State U.) claim to have redrawn, for this newest edition, nearly every one. This very scholarly text has also been extensively revised with 300 new citations about 40 per cent of the 1,800 and three new chapters, one in the introductory section and two in the section on wetland management. Because of the increasing worldwide interest in wetlands, the authors have made this edition more international, adding a chapter on wetlands outside North America and improving the chapter on North American wetlands. There is also a new section on the history of US wetlands law and protection. Expanded is the section on wetland creation and restoration for purposes of habitat replacement and water pollution control. A glossary, bibliography, list of wetland web sites, and useful conversion factors are featured. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
