Orestes Augustus Brownson (1803-76) was a New England political, philosophical, and theological thinker who, before his conversion to Catholicism in 1844, was an important if neglected part of the Transcendentalist movement and the 19th century literary movement known as the American Renaissance. In this volume, editor Butler (government, New Mexico State U.) has selected 24 of Brownson's writings representing the early stages of his career. Originally published between 1828 and 1841, the essays contain Brownson's views on equality, the relationship between church and state, the life of Henri de Saint-Simon, slavery and abolitionism, democracy, the nature of societal progress, class and labor, and related topics.
