Recommends that the US government lift all its regulations regarding the byproducts of nuclear medicine and that the states incorporate necessary controls into their existing regulation. The Institute of Medicine assembled a committee of professionals from a wide range of disciplines to conduct a study independent of an internal one by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Their conclusions are based on a cost-benefit assessment, the focus on a single aspect of nuclear medicine, and the success of states in regulating nuclear medicine in general. Unlike most such committees, consensus was not reached, and a dissenting opinion is appended to the report. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
