This is a useful book for cyclists who want to improve their cycling performance and increase riding pleasure. First several key concepts are covered such as pedaling cadence, technique, and intensity. Next are sections on diet, training regimens, and testing (is the training program working?). Finally there are chapters covering the maintenance of off-season fitness and the usefulness of coaches. More than once the dangers of overtraining are mentioned, and there is an interesting section on "the heart-rate trap" (i.e. the over reliance on heart rate as a guide to training intensity). The book includes a glossary of bicyling terms. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
