This is a collection of previously unpublished interviews conducted by McConnell with people from all over the world who knew Ayn Rand. Interviewees range from the famous (Mike Wallace, Patricia Neal) to the not so famous (Rand's dentist). The primary emphasis is not on her controversial ideas, but on her private life. Given that focus, one notably absent voice is that of Nathaniel Branden, an early acolyte of Rand's whom she later publicly and bitterly denounced after he ended their affair. Nonetheless, there are enough remembrances here for McConnell to bring Rand back to life, however briefly, through the words of those who knew her. The book contains a six-page chronology of Rand's life, an index, and footnotes, including factual corrections of faulty statements made by some of the interviewees. It will be of primary interest to those who already possess a working knowledge of Rand's philosophy and wish to learn more about the woman behind it. The author is a former Archives Researcher with the Ayn Rand Institute. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
