This second-edition of a college-level textbook introduces students to the basics of genetics. Pierce (Baylor University) uses a format similar to the first edition (a conceptual approach, clear illustrations, and an emphasis on problem solving), updating the text where needed and adding new broad topics throughout the text. Six organisms are introduced in the first chapter, and revisited later in the text to illustrate chapter topics. An integrated case study of the genetic disease phenylketonuria is used to provide real-world examples of the theories learned in each major section. Includes discussions on leading ethical issues facing the field including the genetic privacy of the deceased, and the challenges surrounding genetic testing of the unborn.
