This illustrated reference provides year-to-year summaries of events in the history of the US Navy and Marine Corps from the American Revolution onwards. Supported by some 200 b&w photos and illustrations and four indexes, the reference explains the consequences of major events and provides a series of entries to show stages of development and give a sense of continuity. This third edition adds information on the decade from the Gulf War to the turn of the century. The thumbnail sketches lack a direct reference to the small bibliography. Sweetman is retired from the US Naval Academy and is author or coauthor of numerous books on naval history. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
