In constructing a sociology of globalization for this work, Sassen (sociology, Columbia U.) has adopted an expansive definition that encompasses both the common understanding of globalization as the growing interdependence of the world and the formation of global institutions and the less common notion that processes once conceived of as national have now moved beyond the container of the nation. In other words, she seeks to globalize the local and localize the global, partly by incorporating insights from international relations, economic and political geography, and anthropology. The resulting approach is used to reexamine sociological notions of the state, cities, migration, and emergent global classes in reference to the expanded understanding of globalization.
