For Libby Milroy, 1970 is a year of political protest, sexual obsession and self-discovery. Arriving in Berlin at the height of the international student rebellion, she is intoxicated by the excitement that the city seems to promise. To Libby and the other inhabitants of a large apartment in Dahlem, Berlin seems the centre of the universe. While Libby makes friends, takes part in anti-war marches and pursues her infatuation for a Scottish photographer, she ignores warning signs that people close to her are moving from street protests to the politics of terrorism. Returning to Australia, she appears to have created a life far beyond Berlin.Twenty years later, Libby receives a mysterious summons to return. The Wall is down, but for Libby the tensions of the past remain.
