Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was in many ways the quintessential Impressionist painter, exhibiting at all eight Impressionist exhibitions, and retaining to the end of his life an interest in the direct observation of nature. But he was unique among the French artists who visited London in the latter part of the nineteenth century in his choice of subject matter, repeatedly painting the city's suburbs - many of their features recognisable today - in preference to grander sights and monuments. His affection for London's modest suburban landscape, from Norwood to Stamford Brook, Bayswater to Kew, is evident in each of the works shown here: everyday scenes of newly built brick houses, the rapidly expanding railway network, parks and gardens, and ordinary people at work and at leisure.Kathleen Adler's lively and accessible text traces the Pissarro family's history and relocation to London, while Pissarro's impressions of the city are revealed not only through the paintings, but by quotations from his many letters. Together they form a fascinating record of nineteenth-century London by an avant-garde artist.
