The authors of Connecting Teachers, Students, and Standards extend their ideas with practical strategies for teaching English language learners, students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and students with disabilities, within a framework that integrates four major instructional approaches for teaching diverse populations: multicultural education, sheltered instruction, differentiated instruction, and universal design for learning. The framework has been tested in 50 standards-based classrooms, and is composed of six elements: methods, materials, environment, content, collaboration, and assessment. Scenarios follow elementary, middle, and high school teachers. Voltz directs the Center for Urban Education and teaches at the University of Alabama.
