The handiwork of a couple of scientific low-brows, intended to bring a degree of enlightenment to persons rather like themselves (but do such people actually look things up?). The alphabetically-arranged entries tend to the commonplace, and the shoes-off text tends to be disarmingly friendly enough, if not very deeply informative (on p.183 "Microwave oven" merits 131 descriptive words, "Milky way" merits 35). The figures (not so numerous as one might expect) are mainly well-executed drawings of the complexity familiar from coloring books.
