Myers (Hope College, Michigan) hit one out of the park with this text, which was first published in 1983, and is now in its 10th edition. Although only a few years have elapsed since the ninth edition (2008), photos of Obama as president and other updates keep the material fresh. Format and text are lively and engaging, arranged in four sections on social thinking, social influence, social relations, and applications. Within these broad areas, the presentation is shaped in chapters that ask and answer such questions as "How well do our attitudes predict our behavior?" and "How are gender similarities and differences explained?" Enhancing the text are plenty of boxed features and an abundance of illustrations including well-chosen cartoons and enough--but not too many--photos of people doing what people do (usually with smiles).
