Out at the Old Ball Game is a baseball novel with a fresh contemporary twist. We have seen black players overcome prejudice in the major leagues in earlier years, and gay athletes become tennis champions. This witty, Runyonesque book is a fictional extension of this experience to gays in the world of baseball.Scrappy Schwrtznbrgr (born Albert Einstein Schwartzenberger), the sleazy manager of the failing New York Gents, is appalled when his only star player, first baseman Dick (Rootie) Toote, publicly announces he is gay. As Scrappy learns of other gay ball players, some of outstanding talent, he decides to turn what he regards as a disaster into a golden opportunity. He "outs" those other players through a leak to the press, recruits them when they become pariahs to their biased and fearful team owners, and assembles the first all-gay baseball team.
