To trace the origins of feminist consciousness in France, Allen (history, Southern Illinois University) explores the lives and words of Marie-Sophie Leroyer, GeneviTve BrTton-Vaudoyer, and CTline Renooz-Muro, 19th-century women who wrote extensively about marriage, sexuality, education, religion, and politics. By examining the writings of these women, including many unpublished diaries and letters, Allen documents their deliberate efforts to construct a stable, reliable, discursive self.
