The Born Frees is a memoir that tells the story of Kimberly Burge, a Fulbright Scholar who began a writing group for girls in post-apartheid South Africa, where women are treated as second-class citizens (at best), one third of girls are raped by the time they reach womanhood, and HIV runs rampant. Burge’s group of young women are called the “Born Frees,” the first children born free of apartheid, and began the writing group toward the end of their teens to early adulthood. Burge tells each of their stories, how she came to know the girls, and their experiences together their the writing group, as well as how each other the girls found their voices and their strength with the assistance of pen and paper.
