Ziegler's (writing, Holocaust studies, German, Black River Technical College) study focuses on Mabel Rose Jamison Vogel, a southern white woman who chose to teach in one of the two camps located in Arkansas for incarcerated Japanese Americans exiled from California and Hawaii during WWII. The text is based on the author's examination of Jamison's papers, contemporary documents, historical accounts, and interviews with survivors. Of the dozen-plus books written about the Japanese American experience of the internment camps, this is the only one about a teacher in the camps and one of the few written from the point of view of one of the Caucasian staff.
