This Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Macedonia traces the key political, socioeconomic, and cultural developments in the multiethnic tapestry that has been the Republic of Macedonia following its secession from the Yugoslav federation in the autumn of 1991. It also surveys often overlooked topics, such as social transformations in the course of the 20th century and during decades of socialism, as well as recent debates about historical memory and roots of the Slavic Macedonian nation. Complete with a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and more than 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference provides a rich account of the history, present-day politics, and society of the Republic of Macedonia.

From the Abecedar, a 1925 Macedonian language primer published by the Greek government, to Partenij Zografski (1818-1876), a monk famous for his literary works published in western Macedonian vernaculars, this historical dictionary by Bechev (European Studies Centre, Oxford, UK) describes concepts, institutions, events, political parties and movements, and political leaders and other important personages figuring in the history of the country known as the Republic of Macedonia for the past decade and previously part of the former Yugoslavia. The dictionary covers a time period ranging from the establishment of the Kingdom of Macedon in the eighth century BC to the present. As with other volumes in the series, it includes a small collection of maps, a chronology, a general narrative introduction, and a bibliography. It also includes an appendix listing facts about the Republic of Macedonia and another providing information about institutions and officeholders in Macedonia. The volume is wholly new and not a revision of the earlier volume in the series, titled Historical Dictionary of Macedonia. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
