This book presents the latest understanding of causes and treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. After definitions and descriptions of syndromes, the next set of chapters deals with causes, such as genetics, nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and socio-economic aspects. Later chapters deal with consequences of obesity in children and adolescents, covering carbohydrate metabolism, orthopedic aspects, urogenital complications, and pubertal development. One section of chapters is devoted to societal aspects and prevention, such as urban living conditions and the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and obesity in children and adolescents. Of special note is a chapter on the science and politics of metabolic syndrome and Western diet, responding to criticism from the food industry. The book’s final section on management presents options such as obesity treatment programs, adolescent bariatric surgery, and working with families. The book contains color photos, images, charts, and illustrations, and will be of interest to pediatricians and other healthcare professionals.
