Collectible - Acceptable

London: W. Strahan, T. Cadell, and J. Balfour, 1769. NAP. 3-volume set. Sm 4to hardcover in contemporary leather. Six compartments separated by raised bands. Red leather title label to second compartment and gilt volume number to third. Gilt lines outlining raised bands and simple gilt board-edge decoration. Page edges dyed red. 394+479+456pp + indices. Near good. All three volumes typically shelfworn with some staining to boards and spines and joints cracked. Spine tips slightly erose but head- and footbands largely intact. Volume 1 rear board and endpaper detached. Dampstaining across bottom fore-corner and pencil notation to rear pastedown. Pencil notation to rear pastedown of Volume 2. Volume 3 headband lacking. Each volume has a neat early bookplate to front pastedown, stating "George Gipps" and showing a shield with two rows of three stars each, crowned with a crenelated tower and wings. This may be the bookplate of Major Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales, Australia from 1838-1846. Although the connection cannot be confirmed, the winged tower and two rows of stars are symbols associated with the Gipps surname, and the engraver Warwick Sc. was active during the first half of the 19th century.
