To complement the many specialist books on individual bulbs, this is a more general book on the use of bulbs in the rock garden, based as far as possible on the author's own experience, with the accent on cultivation and practical advice rather than on botanical detail. The choice of bulbs to describe has been based on availability as the first criterion; the author has covered as many as possible of those obtainable from trade sources, including cultivars which appear in catalogues but are generally ignored in the bulb literature. The term 'bulb' in the title is used very loosely - corms and tubers are included, but in general rhizomes are not.The plants are grouped according to season, but the author has deliberately been imprecise about flowering times, so that the information will have some meaning to growers coping with very different climates, and in different hemispheres. Although there is a concentration on bulbous plants hardy in Britain, some are included which need a little protection from frost here, but will grow well outside in warmer climates.
