Intended for the lay audience, focuses on seismic and volcanic activity throughout the world, with a state-by-state look at the US. Entries describe characteristics and causes, and include geologic and scientific terminology (some entries, but not many, have pronunciation). The appendices include eyewitness accounts of various catastrophes, and a selective chronology of activities through the end of 1993. The A-Z format makes for a disjointed presentation, although it serves for some reference uses; but a well-organized narrative with a good index would make the subject more comprehensible. The b&w photos are too poorly printed to make much of an impact. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
