Iran has decided to flex its muscles. In a surprise move, four huge supertankers are blasted off the face of the earth as they lumber through the Persian Gulf toward the Straight of Hormuz and the open sea. Hardly have the flames receded when the shipping lanes of the Red Sea are mined, effectively cutting off oil shipments from Saudi Arabia. Iran's ransom terms: a six-month total embargo, then a "fair" price - oil at $100 a barrel. Their purpose: destruction of the U.S. economy.Threats, persuasion and promises of air cover move the Saudis to defy the embargo. The lanes are cleared, and U.S. Air Force pilot Ryan C. Cooney is sent in to join an elite group of fighter pilots charged with protecting the tankers as they make their way through the Gulf.
