The Index of American Design, a record of American craft traditions from early Colonial times to the close of the 19th century, was executed during the 1930s under the WPA by hundreds of artists from 35 states, each of whom searched a specific area for the finest or most representative examples of American design and then rendered them in watercolor or tempera. Some 3,000 selected illustrations, including 800 in color, were published in two volumes in 1950. This reprint is in one volume, under the Abradale imprint of Abrams, which makes backlist favorites available at low cost. Here are displayed photos, drawings, and paintings of furniture, cooking and eating utensils, and decorative objects, with text describing features and highlights. Oversize: 9x12
