Written for teachers, administrators, and policymakers, this book explains how to help fourth and fifth grade students become better readers and writers. It combines scholarly research, classroom applications, student performance, and commentaries on student work to describe their experiences, needs, and the obstacles they face in reading and writing. Hampton and Resnick describe the concept of comprehension and how it relates to learning and reading habits; discuss the writing process and literacy and learning in each academic subject; and give examples from students to illustrate these elements. The book builds on previous books about literacy from the New Standards Project. There is no index. Hampton is associated with America's Choice and previously worked in English Language Arts and Research and Development for New Standards, a joint project of the Learning Research and Development Center at the U. of Pittsburgh and the National Center on Education and the Economy, which developed competitive performance and assessment standards. Resnick is a professor of the Learning Research and Development Center at the U. of Pittsburgh; she co-directed the New Standards project.
