Writing for the layman, Bruno (a clinical psychophysiologist who is director of the International Center for Post-Polio Education and Research) examines the phenomenon of Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS), which is characterized by fatigue, muscle weakness, and chronic pain and affects more than half of the North American survivors of polio. He explores the similarities between PPS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, critiquing the society and the medical community's response to all three conditions. The basic science surrounding these conditions are described and Bruno explores the possibilities that many of those afflicted with CFS may actually have misdiagnosed cases of PPS. Annotation c.
