Description

Fred Wilson Besley, Maryland's first state forester, implemented pioneering scientific and conservation practices that are still used today. He launched a program to reforest thousands of acres in the state, and built an exemplary system of state forest reserves that still form the core of Maryland's network of public lands. This work celebrates Besley's legacy and also details the history of Baltimore's experience with professional forestry during the past 100 years, looking at the impact of early forest management in Maryland and Baltimore on regional and national efforts. An appendix lists Maryland state forest lands acquired as of May 1934, and trees planted and removed in Baltimore 1957-1965. The book is illustrated with a wealth of b&w historical photos from Maryland State Archives collections, many taken by Besley, which include notations made by original photographers. Buckley teaches geography at Ohio University. The book is distributed in the US by the University Press of Virginia. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Read More
