Wardhaugh (emeritus linguistics, U. of Toronto) revises from the 2006 edition a textbook he first loosed on the academic world in 1986 to serve as the core text in an introductory course that might be called sociolinguistics, language in society, or the sociology of language. He makes a point of drawing attention to issues that unsettle the discipline, believing that students are more attracted to problems that need solving than to someone else's solution of what used to be a problem. The overall themes are languages and communities, inherent variety, words at work, and understanding and intervening. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
