It is late June and the summer of 1940 is about to become the myth that will define a generation. But it's real enough for Len Westbourne, a young and inexperienced fighter pilot stationed in South East England. Real too for Stella Gardam, a radar operator with a more worldly attitude altogether. They meet at a dance and fall in love, knowing their time may be short as the War becomes an epic struggle between the Luftwaffe and the RAF: The Battle of Britain. She is his eyes on the ground, he is her protector in the air, and as the battle intensifies so their affair gathers pace in an increasinly uncertain time.
